O2 to launch Xperia Play in June

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play White

Although other major networks have already launched Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Play, O2 still has not yet launched the mobile.

Some bugs were discovered by O2 while testing the mobile known for its “Playstation” feature. This is the main reason why the network has experienced delays in its release of the mobile. The bugs, however, are unknown, but considering that the mobile has been launched in other networks, it is a curious case as to how severe these bugs really are.

On a lighter side, O2 users can now expect the mobile to be launched sometime in June, which has already been confirmed by the network. It seems that the said bugs that caused the delay have already been fixed, which makes the launch possible next month.

Many enthusiasts have wondered to what extent O2 has hurt itself with the delay as other networks have already launched the mobile during the time that the network has spent fixing bugs. Luckily for the network, they get to offer the exclusive Xperia Play in white version, plus the fact that the earthquake in Japan has undoubtedly slowed down production of the mobile.

For now, the exact date of O2’s Xperia Play launch is still undetermined, as well as other details.

Price of iPhone 3GS plummets

The iPhone 3GS, which is now nearly two years old, is being cut down in price by UK network provider O2, making it one of the most affordable Apple-branded handsets on the market.

Consumers will be able to pick up the 3GS for as little as £15 a month, although at this price the bundle will be limiting when you consider the smartphone’s features as it has no data allowance. Of course getting an iPhone free may be enough of an incentive to allow consumers to move past this issue.

The iPhone range has traditionally been one of the most expensive around and UK networks have not really had to be overly competitive on pricing to win new customers, but some are claiming that O2′s price drop gives an indication about some approaching changes which are not currently known to the media.

The iPhone 5 is thought to have been delayed until early autumn as a result of the disasters in Japan, but dropping the price to clear the stock of an old handset is an action carried out to prepare for the launch of a new model, so it is possible that O2 is getting ahead of the game.

Vodafone opens pre orders for new Sony Ericsson smartphones

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc

New and existing Vodafone customers are now able to place their orders for the two new Xperia series smartphones from Sony Ericsson, namely the Play and the Arc.

If you would like to get hold of the Xperia Play with its gaming controls and PlayStation certification, then you will need to get a two year contract, with £35 to pay each month. This will come with 900 inclusive minutes, endless texts and a 750MB data usage cap.

It may be too late to become one of the first 1000 people to order the Xperia Play via Vodafone direct, but those who were lucky enough to rank among them were also gifted a free dock to go with their new handset.

The Xperia Arc, with its class-leading slim design, is going to set you back £30 a month over two years, with an ample 600 inclusive minutes and 500MB of data bundled with the tariff.

Getting the Xperia Play or Arc via Vodafone is made doubly worthwhile if you have friends or family on the same network, because for the span of the deal you will be able to make unlimited calls to them.

Nokia bringing Windows Phone 7 to affordable end of market

Window Phone 7

Window Phone 7 on your next Nokia?

The recent announcement of Nokia’s deal with Microsoft for a range of Windows Phone 7 handsets, had led to fears that the replacement for Symbian would leave many mid and entry level buyers without an affordable option from the Finnish manufacturer, but CEO, Stephen Elop, is convinced that the firm will be able to offer Windows Phone 7 on a budget.

Speaking last week, Mr Elop said that not only will Nokia deliver Windows Phone 7 handsets in a short amount of time, but it will also price these mobiles so that they can appeal to a broad user base without breaking the bank.

Symbian is the platform upon which Nokia has built its reputation and, while it is being put out to pasture, it is still the world’s most widely used mobile operating system, because it can feature on cheap, low-fi handsets.

The issue with Windows Phone 7 is that up until now, Microsoft has insisted upon a set of minimum system requirements, ensuring that the current options from the likes of Samsung and HTC, are at the high end of the market in terms of specs and price.

Nokia has some work to do in convincing the media and its shareholders that it has made the right move.

Xperia Arc from Sony Ericsson leaked online

Xperia Arc

Xperia Arc

Images showing a new Sony Ericsson handset, rumoured to be called the Xperia Arc, have appeared online via Russian website Gagadget, with many speculating that this mobile will be launched at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this week.

The Xperia Arc is so named because it features a curved rear which will be just 8.7 millimetres thick at the centre point. In terms of specs things look promising as it is alleged to sport a 4.2 inch display with a high resolution of 854×480, along with an eight megapixel camera on the rear.

Android 2.3 will be preinstalled, presumably with a heavy dose of Sony Ericsson’s own modification so that it fits in with the other handsets in the Xperia range. A 1GHz processor will speed things along nicely, although now that the promise of dual core smartphones is on the horizon this does not seem as impressive.

In addition to the images, a YouTube video showing off the Xperia Arc has been found, although whether it is the genuine article or a lovingly created hoax remains to be seen. CES is throwing up many surprises, with this expected to be just one of Sony Ericsson’s revelations.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 lands on Three

Xperia X8 on 3

Network provider Three has announced that it is bringing the Xperia X8 smartphone from Sony Ericsson to its UK customers in 2011, offering another option for anyone who wants midrange Android goodness.

The Xperia X8 is smaller and considerably cheaper than its larger cousin the X10 and its specs are suitably slimmed to fit its price bracket, with a 3.2 megapixel camera sitting alongside connectivity including Wi-Fi and GPS for navigation.

Three’s Sylvia Chind said that the Xperia X8 would have unparalleled access to 3G network connectivity as almost 98 per cent of the UK is now covered by its masts.

The Xperia X8 has a small three inch display and, like the original X10, it runs version 1.6 of Android, which is looking a little creaky when you consider the latest Google Nexus S is on version 2.3.

The good news is that Sony Ericsson has heavily customised the user interface to make it look and feel very different from other budget Android smartphones. This also helps compensate for the small size of the display.
