Amazon's Fire Phone emerges

Image via phonearena.comAmazon has finally followed through on an off-rumoured move and entered the smartphone market, with a device called the Fire Phone which it launched last week. And, no doubt, the arrival of one of the world’s biggest retailers in this already competitive arena will be a bit of a problem for its rivals.

The Fire Phone is a well equipped handset, boasting as it does a 4.7 inch HD screen, a quad core Snapdragon 800 processor and a full 2GB of RAM. While it may not be quite up there with the top tier phones of today, it is easily the equivalent of last year?s flagship devices on paper.

Where the envelope does get pushed is the inclusion of Firefly, an all-purpose scanning app that can listen in to songs like Shazam, while also being able to detect which movie or TV show you are watching, if you wish. You can even use it to snap pictures of objects in the world around you and Firefly will identify them.

The aim is to make it easier for you to buy items through Amazon’s online shop. And while the Fire Phone may be getting a US release first, its eventual arrival in the UK seems certain.
