iPhone 5 gets official unveiling

Apple held the attention of a global audience this week when it finally put the rumours to bed and showcased the iPhone 5 at a launch event in the US.

From an aesthetic point of view, the iPhone 5 does not diverge too wildly from the look established by the iPhone 4s back in 2010. Its four inch display with a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio, does make it longer than its predecessors, but it retains the rounded edges and premium construction.

The screen still deserves the title of Retina Display, with a resolution of 640×1136 allowing it to offer the same pixel density as was found on the 4 and 4S models, even if the available area is larger.

The Apple A6 processor doubles the horsepower of the phone, while an eight megapixel camera on the rear and a 1.2 megapixel snapper on the front, are both bolstered with improved image processing technology of their own.

Weighing just 112 grams and measuring 7.6mm thick, the iPhone 5 is the lightest and slimmest handset from Apple yet, even if it is also the longest.

The lack of NFC will disappoint some in the industry, who had been hoping that Apple could take this technology mainstream, but the iPhone 5 is otherwise a worthy evolution.
